A Very Special Dental Storytime

In celebration of National Children's Dental Health Month, join us for a dental-themed storytime with local dentist, Dr. Bunek. Each February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums!

This special storytime is happening this week, Wednesday, February 23rd, 11:30 AM at our Malletts Creek Branch. We look forward to seeing you there!

Every "Love" has a story. For Valentine's Week we had "Lovey" Stories in Preschool Storytime @ Malletts Creek.
We sang "A You're Adorable" an alphabet love song that can be found on
Great Big Hits by Sharon, Lois and Bram.
Something From Nothing follows reincarnations of Joseph's baby blanket until the final piece becomes lost, and nothing is left .... but the story.
Guess How Much I Love You is the duel between little Nutbrown Hare and big Nutbrown Hare for who loves the other most. This love story can be found in Foreign Language Collections because Love is universal.

The theme was "Wheels" in Ms. Rachel's Preschool Storytime this week:
Tip tip Dig Dig introduces the trucks that make a beautiful adventure play park.
The Line Up Book follows Sam as he creates a line of toys from his room all the way through the house to lunch with mother in the kitchen.

Alzheimer's and You

Many people wonder whether and when Alzheimer’s Disease could impact you or a loved one. What are the causes, and are there things you can do to prevent or postpone its onset? On Feb. 14, Kenneth Langa, M.D., Ph.D., UM Dept. of Internal Medicine, will explore the current research on Alzheimer’s Disease from around the world to help us understand the risks and the remedies for this big concern as one ages. AXIS Coffeehouse Goes on Vacation

AXIS Coffeehouse plans to spend the break on the beach in a sunny, tropical locale, and will return on March 4 for our pre-summer session -- featuring special guests Sandy Ryder of the Wild Swan Theater and local author Keith Hood! Eldercare Mediation: You Are Not Alone

For the first time in history, this generation will devote more time to taking care of their parents than they did in raising their own children. One support organization, Children of Aging Parents, estimates that 54 million Americans are now involved in this type of care. We are not well prepared for these responsibilities, but we do our best. Eldercare mediators Zena Zumeta and Susan Butterwick will talk about ways to begin these important conversations.

Roger Chard: A Self-Determined Life

Roger Chard is totally blind. He recently retired from a twenty-two year career as a real estate attorney in Ann Arbor. Among his many achievements are awards in high school and college debate and in downhill skiing. He has performed as a baritone vocal soloist and presented recitals with other musicians in small and large venues. He will speak on how self-determination helped him create a life worth living. This amply reflects the theme of the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Reads 2011, depicted in the book Life is So Good by George Dawson and Richard Glaubman.

AXIS Coffehouse Presents....

Jeff Kass -- who can often be found at the Neutral Zone -- will present some of his awesome work, and give some suggestions for writing and performing poetry. The time: Jan. 21st 6:30-8. Elevator Table at Malletts Creek

In addition to the computer stations available in our Downtown Assistive Technology Lab, there are now two computer stations at the Malletts Creek branch that are located on top of an adjustable elevator table meant to accommodate an individual in a wheel chair or who may otherwise require a station at an alternate height. The table moves up or down by a remote control that's connected to the end of the table just below the table top. If you need to use a computer station on the elevator table, please feel free to let staff know.
