Help Seniors at Doctor Appointments

Jewish Family Services is looking for volunteers who have experience in health care, social work or personal care-giving to become Patient Partners, who accompany seniors to doctor appointments. JFS will provide a required 12 hours of training in early October, and the PP must be available for a least one doctor visit per month. The service involves meeting with the senior before their appointment to prepare questions and to make sure their medication list is up-to-date. At the appointment the PP facilitates communication with the doctor, records all follow-up instructions, and prepares a summary of the outcomes for the patient and family. Michigan Brewers Guild 12th Annual Summer Beer Festival

Home brewers and beer aficionados, this weekend is going to be tasty. The Michigan Brewers Guild 12th Annual Summer Beer Festival kicks off from 5-9pm this Friday, July 24th, and continues the following day from 1-6pm. Featuring over 200 beers from 30+ Michigan breweries, this yearly event takes place in Depot Town's Riverside Park in Ypsilanti, and the weather (so far) is looking good. Not going to be able to sample the goods? Check out the AADL's fine collection of brewing books, perhaps Michael Jackson's Beer Companion or John Palmer's How to Brew. And a very hoppy weekend to the tasters.

Herb and Dorothy

Sold out instantly at the upcoming The Traverse City Film Festival, HERB & DOROTHY tells the extraordinary story of Herbert Vogel, a postal clerk, and Dorothy Vogel, a librarian, who managed to build one of the most important contemporary art collections in history with very modest means.
In the early 1960s, Herb and Dorothy Vogel quietly began purchasing the works of unknown artists with Herb's salary, and living on Dorothy's paycheck alone. Their collecting was guided by two rules: the piece had to be affordable, and it had to be small enough to fit in their one-bedroom Manhattan apartment. They proved themselves curatorial visionaries; most of those they supported and befriended went on to become world-renowned artists including Sol LeWitt, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Richard Tuttle, Chuck Close, Robert Mangold, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Lynda Benglis, Pat Steir, Robert Barry, Lucio Pozzi, and Lawrence Weiner.
In 1992, the Vogels decided to move their entire collection to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. largely as a gift to the institution.
Today Herb and Dorothy still live in the same apartment in New York with 19 turtles, lots of fish, and one cat and the new art they've acquired.
Now - you have a chance to see this award-winning docu-drama FREE!!!! The University of Michigan Museum of Art (525 South State Street), as part of its Art Fair Week programs will be screening this film on July 15 to July 17 (Wed. to Friday) nightly at 7 p.m., and Saturday, July 18, at 3 pm.
In 2008 the University of Michigan Museum of Art was selected to receive a gift of fifty works of art from Herb and Dorothy Vogel. The gifts are part of a national gifts program entitled "The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States."

7th Annual Teen Graffiti Art Contest

Celebrate Art Fair! We'll provide the paint, supplies, canvases and easels. Three winners will receive gift certificates for art supplies at Michigan Book and Supply ($75, $50, $25). All art will be in a summer exhibit at AADL. Finished pieces will be judged by local artist, Joanie Newberry. Look here for last year's winners.

Rolling Sculptures

Stop by the Ann Arbor District Library’s tent from 2-8 pm on Friday, July 10th on Liberty St. between Fourth and Fifth Ave. to make a Rolling Sculpture out of goodies from the Scrap Box and meet Hillary Will, the fastest woman top fuel dragster driver in the world, who will also be speaking at the Downtown Library earlier in the week. The library is joining Main Street Area's Rolling Sculpture Car Show for the first time this year just for the pure fun of it! Use all your creativity to design a wild vehicle and you just might win a prize!

Photowalk: Capture the Beauty of Ann Arbor

AADL is proud to be hosting our first Photowalk this Saturday! Start by joining us for a panel discussion featuring portrait and festival photographer Myra Klarman, fine arts photographer and Crappy Camera Club cofounder Michael Myers, and Ann Arbor News photojournalist Leisa Thompson at 10 am. Then, stick around as we go out in groups to find the interesting things in Ann Arbor and document them with our cameras. You can come back to the Downtown Library Training Center to edit your photos on our iMacs and upload them to your Flickr account or our pictureAnnArbor collection. Bring your camera and join us!

Music for a cause

Help support the activities of the Huron River Watershed Council this Saturday, June 27 at 11300 Island Lake Rd. (off Dexter-Pinckney Rd. just west of downtown Dexter). "Black Train," a local roots band that features country vocal harmonies, will be playing. Bring a blanket or a chair. Gather round a huge bonfire after dark. Eye Exams for Seniors

Between June 1 and August 31 Eyecare America’s Senior Eyecare Program is offering an opportunity for people 65 and older to get a no-cost eye exam and care for any disease detected in the initial visit for up to one year following the exam. You qualify if you have not seen an ophthalmologist in three or more years, and do not belong to an HMO or the VA. Those interested may call toll-free 800-222-EYES (3937) for referral to an ophthalmologist. This program is co-sponsored by the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Knights Templar Eye Foundation, Inc.

The Photowalk and Twitter

If I were to utter the word "Twitter", you will most probably quite certain be put off. What with all the barrage of 'twitter', 'tweets', 'tweeps', 'tweetups' and other lingo floating around. I managed to see CBS cover it too. The hype is definitely overkill but there are good stories to come out of this too.
The Photowalk is one such story. A simple 'tweet'(text message) out to my network on Twitter had the message picked up by Eli Neiburger (@ulotrichous) at AADL. After a brief meeting at AADL, the wheels began rolling and today I can't be happier. That is the power of social networking to me. The ability to reach out to somebody I don't know but may have common interests with. This has only increased the appeal of Twitter for me. Whereas in Facebook, I 'friend' people who I've actually met in real life, the case with Twitter is the opposite.
Today the amazing team at AADL has finally made my dream of a photowalk in Ann Arbor a reality. The opportunity to interact with people who enjoy photography is boundless. If you've ever been to Cafe Zola, be sure to check out the work of Myra Klarman from 'Top of the Park' last summer. The brilliant portrait photographer will be present as a panelist at the Photowalk. And so will be Leisa Thompson, whose sports photography features on Mlive.com and Michael C. Myers of the 'legendary' Ann Arbor Crappy Camera Club.
