The Graffiti Art Contest has occurred each year during the Ann Arbor Art Fairs since 2003. Teens in Grades 6-12 are invited to come down and make a piece in the library parking lot using materials provided by the library. All entries are displayed in a month-long exhibit in the library.
2010 Graffiti Contest
28 painters participated in the 2010 Graffiti Contest on July 23 in the Downtown Library staff parking lot. An interesting array of styles and subjects, with everything from planets, landscapes, and free form, to a 'heart of pi'. The judge for the 2010 contest was Curtis Sullivan, co-owner of Vault of Midnight. The Vault was named the recipient of the 'The Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award' this year at the 41st annual Comic-Con convention in San Diego. More than 40 artists competed in the 2009 Graffiti Contest on July 17 in the Downtown Library staff parking lot. Their creations showed a huge amount of talent and creativity and feature a variety of techniques. The judge for the 2009 contest was Joan Newberry is a senior at Eastern Michigan University pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in painting. At EMU, she has received a scholarship from the Art Department, was featured in the Art Honors Exhibition, and was presented in Volume 38 of "Cellar Roots", the literary and visual arts journal of Eastern Michigan University.
