Fittingly, Lemony Snicket, dreadful author that he is, has chosen to end his series chronicling the Baudelaire children with unlucky number thirteen. The Pittsfield Branch will begrudgingly host an event on Sunday, October 8 from 2-4pm featuring lemony food and miserable crafts. Attendees are requested to wear black in recognition of the solemn occurrence to take place on Friday, October 13.

The children of Ann Arbor are once again invited (this time in costume) to the Pittsfield Branch on All Hallow's Eve for creepy crafts and crawly Halloween treats—a perfectly unpleasant prelude to Mr. Snicket’s appearance that evening at the Michigan Theater. Following his engagement, Mr. Snicket will sign books at the Borders store across the street.

U-M Health System hosts forum on Health Care Access and Insurance

How can health care costs be controlled and access improved? Find out at public forum on improving access to health care and related health care insurance issues that will be held at the Ford Auditorium at the University of Michigan Hospital [1500 E. Medical Center Drive] on Friday, October 6, 2006 from Noon to 2:00 p.m. "Innovations in Health Care Access: What some states are doing; what Michigan can learn" will feature speakers from Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts and a panel of experts. The program is one in a series in the University of Michigan Forums on Health Policy.

2nd Tuesday Book Discussion Downtown October 9

Registration begins Monday, October 2 for the discussion of Kim Edwards’ national bestseller. The story spins on a decision Dr. David Henry makes at the birth of his daughter. The lie he lives to keep his decision secret has very different consequences for two families: one is created by it and the other is devastated. The discussion of Edwards’ enthralling book will be held on Thursday, November 16, 7 – 8:30 pm at the downtown Library multi-purpose room and led by AADL staff. The first 15 cardholders to register may check out a new copy of the book.

Gold Mine for Teachers at the UM Exhibit Museum of Natural History

If you are looking for fun and educational field trips for your class, check into what the University of Michigan Exhibit Museum of Natural History has to offer. There are guided tours exploring how fossils form and the cultures of Native Americans indigenous to the Michigan area. The museum also has planetarium shows, with shows specific for a wide age range of students. Located on the museum website are links to teacher and student resources with scavenger hunts and crossword puzzles, as well as the schedule of current program offerings.

Heads up for Pokemon events this fall, including Pokemon Sunday Oct. 15 from 1-4 p.m. at the downtown library, when AADL-GT will welcome trainers to a Dual Battle Tournament. Take your Game Boy Advance and your copy of Pokemon FireRed, LeafGreen, Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald -- or try our House Pokemon. Pokemon Sunday is for ages 6 and up. This Saturday, Sept. 30, a download of the scarce, legendary character Mew is planned from noon to 3 p.m. at Toys 'R Us in Ann Arbor. For downloads, stores expect players to meet requirements listed in the fourth item of Top News at the Pokemon web site.

Music to Our Little Ears

The Music and Motion program was so popular last season that we had to bring it back with a new twist! The library is partnering with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra and Gari Stein for a music and movement filled morning for young children. This time pianist Kathryn Goodson will be joined by talented trumpeter David Ammer. You have a choice of the 9:30 am or 10:30 am show on Friday, October 6th at the Downtown Library. Warm up by checking out kid’s classical CDs; Bach and Baby Playtime and Happy Baby Classics.
