AADL celebrates the Royal Shakespeare Company's Michigan Residency with several upcoming events

AADL is proud to present several events this week connected with the Royal Shakespeare Company's Michigan residency. On Thursday, October 26, Shakespeare Goes to the Movies; on Friday, October 27, professors from UM's Department of Classical Studies will take you back to the classical world in which Antony and Cleopatra and Julius Caesar are set; on Monday, October 30, take a look behind the scenes at the making of the RSC Residency with panelists from UMS and the RSC's education and production departments. And now through November 11, you can see the actual costumes worn by Kenneth Branagh and Vivien Leigh in the Downtown Library lobby.

Anthony Shadid Visits AADL

Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Anthony Shadid will visit the Downtown Library on Sunday, October 29 from 3:00 to 4:30 pm to discuss his book Night Draws Near: Iraq's People in the Shadow of America's War. The program will include a booksigning with ample opportunity for discussion.

Shadid has a remarkable body of work as a reporter from Iraq - and this should be an exceptional event.

Cranes of Waterloo Festival

The weather is turning to Fall and a fun way to enjoy the season change is to go to the Cranes of Waterloo Festival at Waterloo Recreation Area on October 22. The event includes a day of nature activities such as geology walks, fall color and bog hikes, puppet shows and displays of wildlife photography. The event is free and is from 10 am-4 pm at the Eddy Discovery Center, with a vehicle entry fee of $6 unless you own a state motor vehicle permit.

Frog and Toad at Wild Swan Theater

Bring the kids to the Wild Swan Theater for a production of Frog and Toad playing October 19-21. Arnold Lobel’s funny characters are brought to life as puppets in a show geared for children ages 3-8. Tickets are available in advance on the website or at the door. Gear up for the performance by stopping at the library and picking up some favorites such as Frog and Toad Together and Days with Frog and Toad.

Come kick off Teen Read Week with Huron High student Dylan Wood talking about his experiences as the star of the reality show MTV Made. Dylan will show clips, share what really happens behind the scenes, and answer questions from the audience. Join Dylan Tuesday October 17th 7:00-8:30 pm in the Multipurpose room at the Downtown library, and see if he still wants to be a fashion designer. Teen Dating Violence program, October 18

According to statistics, it is extremely likely that you or someone you know have experienced violence in a dating relationship. Watch and discuss a video, "It Ain't Love" Wednesday, October 18 at 6:30 p.m.

This documentary shares the experiences of "Faces" an improv theater company made up of young adults, ages 15-24. These young adults combine acting and therapy to create a show focused on abusive relationships. Counselors from SafeHouse will lead the discussion after the film.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Sponsored by a number of organizations, it is designed to raise awareness of the effort to end violence against women, children and within families. It is estimated that 20% of violent crimes against women are committed by their partners. Locally the effort to support and protect victims is led by the SafeHouse Center. Family
