Tracing your family history? The Genealogical Society can help.

If you are exploring your family history, the Genealogical Society of Washtenaw County, Michigan is a great place for getting help, listening to informative speakers and meeting fellow genealogists. The society will be holding its next meeting on Sunday, September 24, 2006 at the Education Center Auditorium on the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Campus at 5305 Elliott Drive in Ypsilanti. The featured guest speaker will be James Craven, noted conservator at the Bentley Historical Library, who will speak on repairing and restoring books, manuscripts, maps and photos. Also on the program is a class dealing with researching Connecticut ancestors. The program begins at 1:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Not Just for Kids Movie Series

Michigan Theater has posted the schedule for the 2006-2007 Not Just for Kids Movie Series, and there is an exciting lineup. The theater is partnering with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, producing a great experience full of music, movies and theater. The library has many books to compliment the lineup including Peter and the Wolf, Junie B. Jones and Henry and Mudge.

Super Smash and Double Dash Tournament Weekend

Registration is open for Friday Night's Super Smash Bros. Melee Tournament from 6-9 PM for ages 13 and up, and Saturdays' Round 2 in the Super Smash Double Dash Championship Series! Register now to bypass long lines at the event and get right to open play. Tonight's Melee tournament will be 100% ITEM-FREE, so those of you that have no love for lady luck can relax a little, but remember that you'll have no excuse if you lose. Read on for more.

Signed up to take the SAT and/or the ACT soon? There’s an online library database, LearningExpress Library, that can help you get ready. Join us in the Pittsfield Computer Training Center to take a practice test that will be scored and tell you how you did.

Need test taking tips? The library has helpful books like Zen in the Art of the SAT: How to Think, Focus, and Achieve Your Highest Score.

We're Back!!! Baby and Preschool Series begin this week!

The Baby PlayGroup Series and the Preschool Storytime Series start this week throughout the Library System and you don't want to miss any. Remind Babies to bring a Big Person to Baby PlayGroups. Remind the Little Kids to bring their Big People to Preschool Storytimes. While you are in the building say "Hello" to the puzzles, pick a few Books, choose some CDs to sing along together, then wave Bye-Bye when you are done. You can come back next time, too!

Invasion of the mini-books!

Have you ever wondered what your favorite book would look like in miniature? Well, now's your chance! This Sunday, September 10th, marks the fourth annual Kerrytown BookFest and this year the special guest is the Miniature Book Society (MBS). The festival will be accompanied by lectures, demonstrations and plenty of exhibitors showing and selling books of all kinds. So come to the BookFest and pick up some new, potentially tiny, reading material!

Need to relax?!!

Try out " Yoga Nidra: Psychic Sleep and Relaxation.":September 7 & 8. The program will be taught by Institute of Holistic Health (Miami, Florida) founder Swami Brahmavidyananda, a native of Bihar, India and disciple of Bihar School of Yoga founder Swami Satyananda Paramahamsa. Brahmavidyananda also hosts "An Evening of Wisdom and Guided Meditation" in the Michigan Union Room D on September 9, 6-9 p.m. Michigan Union Sophia Room B (Sept. 7) & Room D (Sept. 8). The program is free and donations are welcome. For more information call 734-665-7801.
