Healthy Vision Month: Vision Screenings & More for All Ages

Come to the Downtown library on Sunday, May 22, 1 - 4 PM for vision screenings. The screenings are available at no charge for all ages: babies through adults. At 1 PM, enjoy opening remarks by Dr. John Barletta of Huron Ophthalmology. At 2 PM, co-authors Madison and Malia will read their short story, “The Blind Porcupine”. The sisters were born blind and now have sight thanks to cornea tissue donors and the efforts of the Michigan Eye-Bank. At 3 PM, meet Paws With A Cause® Assistance Dogs. The Healthy Vision Month programs above are cosponsored by the Ann Arbor Host Lions Club, Michigan Eye-Bank and University of Michigan Taubman Health Sciences Library.

Corrections and Security Career Fair

Washtenaw Michigan Works is hosting a Corrections & Security Career Fair on Thursday, May 19, 2011 from 10 am to 2 pm. The Michigan Department of Corrections and Securitas are recruiting for a a wide range of positions in several areas of employment. All attendees of the career fair must be registered at the Washtenaw County Michigan Works Career Transition Center. If not registered, plan to arrive one hour prior to the event to register. June/July Computer Classes

The June/July computer class schedule is available! You can check out the schedule online or pick up the brochure at any library location.

We'll offer a new class for June and July named Etsy. What's Etsy? Etsy is a hip online marketplace for vintage goods, handmade crafts, and supplies. Etsy will be instructed by local artist Kate Kehoe, owner of Chicalookate.

All computer classes are open to the public. In other words, you don't have to have a Ann Arbor District Library card to attend a class. Registration is not required and classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tutors from The University of Michigan Chapter of Circle K have scheduled 3 more sessions in May for students in grades K-12.

You will find tutors on Mondays between 4 and 8pm, .... May 9, May 16, and May 23, 2011, in the DownTown Library Youth Department Story Corner.

AADL also provides access to Brainfuse. Live tutors are available online from 2-11 pm every day through the Library website!

Award Winning Journalist Eugene Robinson to Speak at U of M

Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Eugene Robinson will be speaking Friday, April 29th from 1:00 to 2:30pm at the Hatcher Graduate Library Gallery Room. A former U of M student, Robinson was the first African American co-editor-in-chief of the Michigan Daily. He has since written for the San Francisco Chronicle and later the Washington Post as both foreign correspondent and foreign editor. Robinson was honored with a Pulitzer Prize in 2009 for Commentary for his work and insight on political and social movement. He currently appears on MSNBC as a Political Analyst. Sponsored by the University of Michigan's Center for Afroamerican & African Studies and The Michigan Daily, the event is free and open to the public. Storytime! At the UMMA?!

On Saturday, March 26th and again on Saturday, April 16th, children ages 4-7 are invited to hear a story at the University of Michigan Museum of Art! Student guides from the University will read stories related to the art in the gallery, with kids welcome to participate and respond! Storytimes start at 11am. Author Lois Lowry Lecturing at Rackham Auditorium

Noted children's author Lois Lowry will be lecturing at U of M's Rackham Auditorium on March 31st, 2011 from 4 to 5pm! Lowry's work includes the Newberry Award winning novels " Number The Stars" (1990) and " The Giver" (1994). Her work is well known for addressing challenging topics such as the Holocaust, racism, and death. A booksale will be held before and after the lecture.
