Regarding: security

Patron Comment: As a regular library patron, I am thoroughly disappointed by the way I have been treated by security. Today, Aug. 18th, I was using the library's facilities and stepped outside to receive a phone call so as to not disrupt the other patrons. My conversation was rudely interrupted by a security staffer who instructed me to leave the premises saying I was loitering. Because other, older patrons were waiting outside, I cannot help but assume that I was being discriminated against because of my age - I am a recent college graduate. It really upsets me that I was interrupted and told to leave the library that I frequently patronize and have made numerous donations to. In no way do I think I deserve special treatment but as a city resident, I do believe I deserve fair treatment.

AADL Reply: First let me say that I appreciate it that you went outside to use your cell phone. It is normal practice for our Security staff to discourage people from just hanging around and loitering outside of the building. Security asks them to either come inside or leave Library property. We do this in order to maintain a safe and inviting atmosphere for the public entering the building. I'm sorry that this happened to you and I hope your next visit is more pleasant. Tim Minick Manager, Facilities

Regarding: cell phones

Patron Comment: I would like to see the use of cell phones ban inside the library. This is distracting and annoying to library patrons.

AADL Reply: Thank you for your recent comment card regarding cell phone use in our library facilities. While the library does not ban cell phone use outright, we do prohibit sustained noise in tones louder than the general noise level of the area. Our Rules of Behavior are available at every public service desk in the library system as well as on our website at http://www.aadl.org/aboutus/policies/behavior. If sustained noise of any type that is louder than the general noise level of the area disrupts your visits to our library locations, please do not hesitate to ask staff to intervene for you. We would be happy to enforce the Rules of Behavior. Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

Patron Comment: Nightjohn, by Gary Paulsen - too violent for the youth section! Audio recording.

AADL Reply: Ms. Pace, Thank you for taking the time to comment on the Library's collection. We work hard to provide a selection of material suitable for all of our patrons. If you wish to have this particular title reconsidered, please ask for a Request for Reconsideration Form at a public desk when you are next in the library. Sincerely, Josie Parker Director

Regarding: programs & events

Patron Comment: The Library should do birthday parties. I think this would be successful and something parents would enjoy, i.e., room rental, storyteller, each child picking a book out, parents provide food and cake! I hope to see this soon.

AADL Reply: Thank you for submitting your suggestion that the Library offer birthday parties as a service to our patrons. This is an interesting idea that we will consider for the future. We appreciate you taking the time to let us know how we can serve you better. Thank you for using the Ann Arbor District Library.
