Calling All Cup Stackers!

Maybe you’ve been practicing at school or maybe you are a cup stacking fanatic at home. Either way, come to the library to practice your cup stacking skills and work on besting your greatest time at the 3-6-3 stack.

Meet at the Pittsfield branch on November 22 at 2 PM. We will start with some drills and move on to the tournament, ending by 4 PM. Prizes will be awarded to the top three fastest stackers. This tournament is for ages 8 and older.

Mad Tea Party

Join us during Children’s Book Week to make many different kinds of tea bags, outrageous hats and funny place mats for our tea party in true Alice in Wonderland fashion. Six year olds and up are invited to bring their imaginations along to the Mad Hatter Tea Party at the Pittsfield Branch on Thursday, November 16th at 4:00 pm.

Take an interactive tour of Ellis Island with video clips and more at Scholastic.com. Books the Library owns are Ellis Island, I Was Dreaming To Come To America, and Liberty Rising: the Story Of The Statue Of Liberty.

Get your Library Card registered online so you can get into the Library databases from home. Then you can read Magazine articles that support school reports! Kids InfoBits can be found on the Library website under the research tab.

Clever Ali by Nancy Farmer

Ali’s father is in charge of the Sultan of Cairo’s carrier pigeons. When Ali turns seven he is old enough to work with his father in the palace. He is given his own pigeon and told not to overfeed it or it will become selfish and lazy. Ali doesn’t listen and overfeeds the pigeon, which causes a catastrophe that may get his father thrown into the Sultan's bottomless pit. When the cruel Sultan gives Ali one chance to save his father, he comes up with a plan to rescue his father and rid Cairo of the evil Sultan. Newbery author, Nancy Farmer, weaves an intriguing tale in the tradition of the Arabian Nights.

Korean Fun at the Library

We are very excited about our Korean Family Celebration this Sunday at 4:00 pm at the Downtown Library. We will have music with Sinaboro, a fan dance, a paper doll craft and homemade Mandu, Kim-Bab and more! On Tuesday, November 14 at 7:00 pm the delicious Newbery Award winning author of Bee-Bim Bop, Linda Sue Park, will chat with families of children aged 8 and up. Treat yourself to A Single Shard or Project Mulberry and meet Linda. She is great fun and brimming with talent!

Along the way, they learn research, writing, teamwork, and technology skills and compete for exciting prizes." You can see winning web sites by students in different age categories. The site guides you with timelines and guidelines to make your own entry. What FUN!

Haunted Halloween Happenings Around Town

Looking for spooky things to do around town to get in the Halloween mood? Try some of these Haunting events!

Greenhills School 8th Annual Halloween Event—Friday, Oct. 27. The Haunted House is from 6-7:20pm and the concert starts at 7:30pm.

Boo Bash at the Briarwood Mall—Saturday, Oct. 28. Dress in your costume and come to the mall for treats and Halloween activities between 3pm and 5pm.

Animal Haunts Halloween Walk at the Leslie Science Center—Saturday, Oct. 28. Take lantern-lit guided tours of the woods and meet many costumed animals, followed by storytelling, songs and refreshments.

Halloween Skate at Veterans Ice Arena—Saturday, Oct. 28. Come in costume and skate to spooky tunes.

Lucy’s grandmother Luciani Maria Isabela Galvez-Molinero often forgets things like the toast in the toaster and which way to turn to go to the park. What Lucy’s Little Mama remembers is what makes this book so endearing. An excellent read about the warmth, love and family traditions that only a grandmother can share.
