Register for English Language Classes

Are you an English Language Learner or use English as a Second Language and want to improve your skills? Appointment times to register for classes in Fall 2012 will be held Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday August 20, 21 and 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Ann Arbor Public Schools Adult Education. Classes are free, and begin Friday September 7. Enrollment is done on a first come, first served basis and you don't have to live in the AAPS district to enroll. At the eBus you can get a free copy of your credit report as well as credit counseling, receive home foreclosure prevention information, sign your child up for free or low cost health insurance, and community representatives will be available to talk about other resources for health, dental, food, and other basic needs. Ann Arbor District Library is one of 5 Downtown establishments with the highest bus usage

The Ann Arbor District Library was cited by GetDowntown in this announcement as being one of the Top 5 Downtown establishments that use the AATA bus system the most.

GetDowntown was established in 1999. In cooperation with the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority, a.k.a. The Ride, the City of Ann Arbor, and the Downtown Development Authority, GetDowntown is a tireless promoter of thinking green when it comes to workers in the Downtown area.

Among the many activities GetDowntown promotes are the go!pass (downtown employees can ride the bus for free), the annual Commuter Challenge, a fun-filled competitive event that rewards the business with the most 'green' miles racked by a business's employees, and ZipCars.

This is just one more reason to love living in Ann Arbor.

Artists with disabilities, and their allies, living in Washtenaw County are invited to enter the 2nd Annual Allies for Disability Awareness Art Show, Oct. 22-26, 2012 at the Duderstadt Gallery on the UM North Campus. Any type of art is welcome, especially interactive or tactile pieces that can be touched and/or played with. If you want to participate please email disabilityartshow@gmail.com, and they will send you the link for the application Website. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with a final deadline of August 31. This is in conjunction with UM Investing in Abilities Week.

Financial Awareness for Older Adults

As adults over 55 with low income and disabilities strive to stay in their homes, the threat of theft, fraud, and other forms of financial exploitation increase. To become more educated about this, they, their caregivers and service agencies who assist them, Michigan Ability Partners (MAP) is offering training to increase financial management skills. This is made possible by a grant from The Anna Botsford Bach Fund for Seniors at the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation. Play and Connect!

Imagine a big, interactive and colorful space for pure play at the Play Connection on Sunday, August 5th from 1:00 – 3:00 pm at the Pittsfield Branch. All parents with children on the autism spectrum are invited to join the kids as they bounce bumpy balls, crawl through tunnels, create towers with construction toys, put on a puppet show, dig in buckets of buttons or feathers and more! Onna Solomon and Dr. Rick Solomon, from the Play Project, will be there to chat and share their wisdom with parents and children.

Farmers Market turns 93!

This Saturday there is an extra special reason why you should attend the Ann Arbor Farmers Market. Free ice cream! At noon, while you wait in line for ice cream, be sure to spout off some of the market history you learned while listening to these oral histories.

Farmers getting together is a long-standing tradition. On August 23, 1884, farmers and friends from Washtenaw, Livingston, and Oakland counties gathered in Whitmore Lake for a pinic. How do I know this? I read an Ann Arbor Courier article in old news!

Purple Rose Theatre: On Golden Pond

The play by Ernest Thompson spotlights the Thayer family at their summer home on Golden Pond, where they are moved to renew their bonds of love and to overcome long standing generational divisions.
