Have You Read a Good Short Story Lately?

by Bertha

For twenty years the AADL has sponsored an annual Short Story Contest often refereed to as It's All Write! A challenge to judge, but a pleasure to read, these stories are selected first as Finalists, then as Winners by authors, who amongst them have won many awards from the Printz to the Hopwood. This year's stories can be found here.

In addition to local teen writers' stories, here's a list of Teen Short Story Collections from your library's collection, along with publications from 826michigan, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.

Interspersed with reading great short stories is writing some too, and here's a couple titles that could help, Writing To Describe and 1001 Writing Projects for Students.

"There have been great societies that did not use the wheel, but there have been no societies that did not tell stories." Ursula K Le Guin
