correct procedure for advancing film

I picked up one of these cameras at a yard sale in perfect condition. It didn't come with an owners manual, so I've been proceeding with caution. I did however rip out a few of the perforations on the upper edge of the film, which I assume was caused by operator error. I'm guessing that the proper technique for advancing the film includes shifting the hexagonal knob adjacent to the film counter on top of the camera to the left. If this is correct, should it be depressed for the duration of advancing the film for the next exposure or should it be depressed and released prior to advancing the film?
