Wash Lit logo

Interested in making a lasting difference in the life of a non-reader or English Language Learner? Washtenaw Literacy is always looking for one-on-one tutors and ESL Group Leaders. Come to a volunteer orientation to see how you can make a difference. The next session is Saturday March 22nd from 10-11 a.m. at the Ypsilanti District Library. On April 22 there's another orientation at 7 pm at Nicola's Books. Go to Washtenaw Literacy for their training schedule and other information. Washtenaw Literacy is the only agency in the county who offers free tutoring year round and they do marvelous work in an effort to enhance the life of our community members.

I've been a Washtenaw Literacy volunteer tutor for about 10 years now and love it. Tutoring immigrants, whether one-on-one or in a conversation group, is like traveling around the world without leaving Ann Arbor. I've met fascinating new friends from China, Russia, Somalia, Morocco, Colombia, Mongolia, Korea . . . you name it. Even if you've never taught before (like me), the training sessions prepare you well with ideas and activities, and the atmosphere is very relaxed and welcoming. --Lorraine (http://www.hoppingfun.com)

Thanks for your comment, Lorraine. We appreciate your post and how you've encouraged others to give volunteering with Washtenaw Literacy a whirl. A beautiful testimonial!
