Crimestoppers Unite!

by Maxine

Today, November 20, is the birthday of Chester Gould, born in 1900 in Pawnee, OK, and the creator of the famous, long running comic strip, Dick Tracy. Tracy, the square jawed detective, proved the adage,"Crime doesn't pay." The strip first appeared October 4, 1931 in the Detroit Daily Mirror and was later syndicated in over 1,000 newspapers. It featured Tess Trueheart, later to become Mrs. Tracy, and a slew of bad guys with names like Pruneface, Flat Top, B-B Eyes and Mumbles. Gould also created within the strip a "Crimestoppers Notebook" with tips on crime prevention. This led to the creation of many "Crimestopper" clubs for kids, the first in his hometown of Woodstock IL. So, all you CSI fans, learn the basics of criminal investigation from one of the masters. The Library has a great collection of books on the history of comics that may include some of the Tracy strips or if you know someone who's a Tracy fan, you can order collections online. We also have the movie starring Warren Beatty and Madonna. Stephen Sondheim wrote some of the music.
