AADL-GT Round 1 Results: TORTURIS EXUVIAS EUNT

This past weekend's tournaments included the AADL-GT 2006 Season Opener, and to the Turtles did go the spoils as the Savage Brothers and Turtle Clan flew to the top of the season leadboard, with [gtplayer:143] taking first place in both the single-player and team Mario Kart events, [gtplayer:146] making his way to the finals 3 times, and both of them leading their Clan to victory in the first ever Clan Battle. The afternoon began with single-player Super Smash Bros. Melee with 90 entrants. The absence of heavy hitters [gtplayer:483] and [gtplayer:340] left a power vacuum that brought several new faces to the semifinal round, but ultimately the familiar and formidable [gtplayer:168] of Clan Bros & Co (a fusion of last season's Noise Machine and Skillz Dat Killz) claimed victory and $40, vanquishing the 2nd-place rookie and $30 winner [gtplayer:806], while the $20 3rd place prize went to melee veteran [gtplayer:606], who defeated [gtplayer:146] in his first trip to the single-player melee finals, where he won another t-shirt.

We continued into the Team Melee Event with 40 teams registered. Time limits once again forced a single-elimination tournament, essentially, setting up finals where team 8-ball ([gtplayer:504] and [gtplayer:742]) took First prize, leaving BEATUSANDDIE ([gtplayer:737] and [gtplayer:738] of new clan We Are Hard) to Second prize. Team Bad Dog ([gtplayer:146] and [gtplayer:170]) of Turtle Clan took Third prize, defeating The Team (GT Veterans [gtplayer:382] and [gtplayer:334]).

On to Mario Kart Single-Player Race, featuring 84 contenders getting 2 races each. Only 4 players -- [gtplayer:140], [gtplayer:197], [gtplayer:146], and [gtplayer:457] -- took first in both their races, and after elimination rounds, we reached a final race that read like a who's who of GT Kart superiority and Clan Dynasties: 3 players from Bros & Co., 2 from Turtle Clan, 2 from the Troublemonkeys, and 1 Vaccinated Monk. When that final race was over, the mighty [gtplayer:143] was once again victorious, with [gtplayer:197] taking Second prize, [gtplayer:139] taking Third, and [gtplayer:736] taking Fourth.

Heading into the Team Mario Kart event, Turtle Clan was in the lead with Bros & Co. nipping at their heels, with the final two spots in the Clan Battle there for the taking as other clans, new and old, jockeyed for position. 36 teams entered, and after a hotly contested final race, [gtplayer:143] and his brother were again triumphant, as BigTeeth ([gtplayer:820] and [gtplayer:377]) took Second, half-troublemonkey GetDoon ([gtplayer:823] and [gtplayer:175]) got Third, and Durski-powered Bros & Co team LardinaBox ([gtplayer:198] and [gtplayer:736]) finished in Fourth.

With the 4 regular events complete, it was time for the first of 4 monthly Clan Battles for the 4 Clans that racked up the most total points during that day's events. While clans could have up to 6 players, only the top 4 players scores counted for each clan, so be sure to check out the Clan Leaderboard to see which Clans had depth and which barely squeaked by. At any rate, this month's 4 Contender Clans were the Mighty Turtle Clan, with 6470 points, Bros & Co with 5625, Black Shark Clan in a distant third with 2620, and rookie Clan The Pocket Rockets with 2475. The first round of the Clan Battle was a short Team Melee Round Robin tournament which eliminated the Kart-centric Black Shark Clan. Next came two 6-player Kart Races with two players from each clan, which eliminated the Pocket Rockets, who could not compete against the formidable skill and experience of Turtle Clan or Bros & Co. Finally, the Durski Brothers of Bros & Co. faced off against the Savage Brothers of Turtle Clan in the Clan Battle Suprise finals: Mario Power Tennis! In a single 6-game set (where the first game stayed in Deuce for over 5 minutes), Turtle Clan was finally victorious, winning the first Clan Battle and cementing themselves high atop the leaderboard.
