2005 Whitbread Literary Awards shortlist

The 35th Annual Whitbread Literary Awards announced its 2005 shortlist on November 16, 2005.

The Whitbreads, one of the most prestigious book awards in the British Isles, was begun in 1971 by Whitbread PLC, a leader in the hospitality industry in the United Kingdom.

The shortlist winners in their respective categories are:

Whitbread First Novel Award

Tash, Aw. The Harmony Silk Factory
Evans, Diana. 26a
Hobbs, Peter. The Short Day Dying (this title will be ordered on December 15, 2005)
Zadok, Rachel. Gem Squash Tokoloshe (not yet available in this country).

Whitbread Novel Award

Hornby, Nick. A Long Way Down
Rushdie, Salman. Shalimar the Clown
Smith, Ali. The Accidental
Wilson, Christopher. The Ballad of Lee Cotton (not yet available in this country).

Whitbread Biography Award

Farndale, Nigel. Haw-Haw (not yet available in this country).
Mabey, Richard. Nature Cure (not yet available in this country).
Masters, Alexander. Stuart: A Life Backwards (will be available in this country in May 2006).
Spurling, Hilary. Matisse the Master

Whitbread Poetry Award

Harsent, David. Legion (not yet available in this country).
Logue, Christopher. Cold Calls (not yet available in this country).
Price, Richard. Lucky Day (will be ordered December 15, 2005).
Yeh, Jane. Marabou (not yet available in this country).

Whitbread Children’s Book Award

Boyce, Frank Cottrell. Framed (not yet available in this country).
McCaughrean, Geraldine. The White Darkness (not yet available in this country).
McKay, Hilary. Permanent Rose
Thompson, Kate. The New Policeman (not yet available in this country).

The Whitbread purse is substantial. The winner in each of the five categories will receive £5000 ($8667.25) and the overall winner receives an additional £25000 ($43336.20)

The winners will be announced in January 2006.
