A powerful new novel about China

by annevm

Readers in Ann Arbor Reads earlier this year may be interested in Beijing Coma by Ma Jian. I have an uncle who is immersed in the book this summer, maybe because he was at Tiananmen Square a few days after the 1989 massacre. He says the book is "heavy," but definitely worth reading. There's a good review in The New Yorker magazine.

I can't imagine being at Tiananmen Square right after the 1989 massacre. One of my favorite photos of all time is the "Unknown Rebel" photo taken by Jeff Widener. It has become a symbol for bravery and political reform. Time magazine included the "Unknown Rebel" in its 100 most influential people of the 20th century. Pretty amazing.
