Some said they wouldn't be able to march because their feet were a different shape than a white man's. Others claimed they couldn't be controlled and would act like jungle savages on the battlefield, but the brave men of the Massachusetts 54th volunteer infantry proved them all wrong. This is the story of the first northern black regiment in the entire Civil War. These men were faced with the almost insurmountable task of proving to the white race that they not only would fight, but that they could fight as courageously and boldly as their white companions in arms
