Fails to Take Flight submitted by Meginator on July 1, 2023, 5:17pm This book has a little bit of solid factual information buried in its text, but readers will have to work exceptionally hard to find it between the ineffective narrative framing device and a veritable parade of nonsequiturs. Masters can’t seem to decide whether the book is a history of airplane design, a celebration of global industrial interconnectedness, or (most oddly) an advertisement for the Boeing Dreamliner, which makes constant cameo appearances for no discernible reason. She introduces complex flight physics concepts like lift and drag without bothering to explain them, which makes no sense in what is obviously intended to be an introductory text for readers who cannot be reasonably expected to have a working knowledge of aerospace engineering. The text itself has no sense of flow and feels almost random in its jumps between (at best) vaguely related topics, as if the point is to cover certain keywords without bothering to consider how they fit into a broader picture. This book doesn’t work as a historical overview, as a compelling example of real-world industrial design, or, indeed, as a collection of words intended to enlighten readers on a subject.
