COMMUNITY REVIEWS

A Court of Mist and Fury - a powerful follow up to the first book! submitted by jsphntan on May 16, 2016, 8:24pm I’m in grad school now and I don’t get much time for leisure reading, but this book has reminded me of why I love Young Adult fantasy…and then some. I didn’t read it just once, I read it TWICE because it was just that satisfying. In ACOMAF, we see Feyre faced with the shattered pieces of her heart and identity caused by what was done to her as well as by the decisions she made while “Under the Mountain” (in ACOTAR). Maas does an excellent job developing Feyre’s character in a believable way – one that worked really well with the storyline. Throughout the book, the reader goes on an emotional journey with Feyre as she grows into her power and demonstrates strength that comes from respecting herself and what she is now (a pretty damn strong High Fae) – an excellent thing for any young woman to read. I was also SO excited to see the twist on the Hades/Persephone-like plot (Rhysand/Feyre) that Maas weaved in there, not to mention the introduction of a pretty epic team fighting the bad guys together. Maas also does an excellent job in expanding the universe of this book. In summary, ACOMAF is emotionally charged, touching, and serious, but it is also funny and wildly entertaining. The ending leads me to believe that there will be a pretty IMPRESSIVE conclusion to the trilogy.

Note to the parents: This book can get pretty steamy/descriptive in terms of romantic scenes. (I’m just alerting you if you are very cautious about the types of books/scenes you want your kids to read given their age range.) If it helps, I feel like the author was very purposeful in including those scenes, and if anything, I think things are described in a way that is healthier than what’s in a lot of teen fiction nowadays (ie: destructive relationships).

Truly fantastic fiction submitted by shankart on July 9, 2016, 5:59pm The second book in the series "A Court of Thorns and Roses", this book deals with the aftermath of the last book's climactic event. Unlike other authors, Maas continues to build on her character's development by including believable responses to traumatic situations and emotional upheaval. The book also introduces the reader to the Night Court by fulfilling Feyre's bargain to spend time there, and in the process introduces other characters. As another reviewer mentioned, there are explicit scenes in this book, so not for younger readers. Cannot wait to see what the next novel brings!

Sarah J at it Again submitted by taylorm on July 10, 2016, 11:58pm Okay so I loved the first one, but I passed it off as a wildly entertaining, but not necessarily epic and expected a follow up of about the same level. But then Sarah J Maas slapped out this high-level sequel and proved that this series will truly be EPIC. She writes traumatic experience, mixed emotion, and romance beautifully. Romance especially ;) ;) ;) Seriously though if you like fantasy, saucy romance, young adult, Throne of Glass, or just drama with a touch of humor you're going love it!

SPOILER ALERT - great fantasy, problematic romance submitted by zixyxuan on June 25, 2017, 11:13pm I had to wait a full day before writing this review. So first of all, I loved the first half of this book. Feyre was finally discovering herself and learning to control her powers. Sarah J. Maas also did a splendid job on expanding the Prythian universe and its magic system.

And then I just had tons of issues with the rest of the book:

(beginning of spoilers)

1. Honestly, how many times did Maas write that Rhys was the MOST POWERFUL HIGH LORD and his "family" contained the MOST POWERFUL WARRIORS? This was always something that really annoyed me. Like the main love interest is all-mighty and super duper powerful. None of them even bother having flaws...oh wait, their flaws are their love interests. It's so cliche in YA and it's disgusting.
2. Tamlin experienced a brief Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde moment between the first and second book so that Feyre could actually find her true love. I think people need to understand that it's okay to fall in and out of love. It's a normal phenomenon. It's not normal when your boyfriend suddenly becomes emotionally and physically abusive. Like, where what all of that coming from? He didn't retain any of his redeeming qualities from the first book! Yes, the "Under the Mountains" experience was probably traumatic, but Tamlin completely fell away from his original character so Maas can force Rhys on us next. And did I mention that Feyre had no transitioning from Tamlin to Rhys in just six months? She claims that Tamlin no longer fought for her love, but she never bothered to fight for him either.
3. The sex scenes. Okay, no. Just no. It was so cringe-worthy.
4. I was not a fan of the Feyre and Rhysand ship. I like them individually as characters throughout the novel, but I hated them together. Their relationship is not healthy; it's a power play. There was a lack of communication between these two lovers and it was always expected for Rhysand to apologizes to her every time they bicker about nonsense that it just became really annoying. It's honestly really sickening watching their relationship develop.

(end of spoilers)

I was so annoyed at this book that I originally wanted to give it 1.75 stars, but I think the ending had some redeeming qualities and I liked how nicely the author wraps up the transition book in this trilogy (which means I will most likely HAVE to read the last book to find out what happens next).

Overall rating: 3 stars

Five stars submitted by singleka on June 15, 2018, 12:37pm I loved getting lost in this story!

I rate it five stars!

Okay submitted by zmclaugh on July 27, 2018, 7:45pm This book is like candy. There's no depth, but there's lots of drama and *perfect* people, etc., etc. It's a fun read but there's no substance and there are some things that are really annoying.

Characterization also changes a lot from the first book to this one.

Amazing! submitted by Smile1975 on August 13, 2018, 10:48pm This is the type of book you start reading around noon and when you look up again it's dark and you don't know where the time has gone.

Fantastic! submitted by Nancianna Girbach on September 4, 2018, 1:47pm One of the best fantasy books I have ever read! It grabs a hold of you and never lets go! Can't wait to start on the 3rd book.

AMAZING submitted by caherne on August 15, 2020, 5:08pm This series is sooo good. I want able to put it down.

Perfection submitted by ShanleyBelle on July 19, 2021, 5:37pm This is one of my all-time favorite books. Pick this up, and keep it in your heart forever!

THIS IS THE ONE submitted by audreyhalversen on July 12, 2022, 10:41pm This is the best book in the series, by far, if you ask me. Team Rhys forever. [Insert heart eyes emoji]

The best submitted by zbo919 on July 28, 2022, 9:52pm my favorite of the series, highly recommend if you were a fan of a court of thorns and roses!

second better than the first submitted by AnnieKelly on August 1, 2022, 2:21pm Not often is a sequel better than the first in a series, but this one definitely wins between the two (and the first one is great). It flips much of what you believe to be true on its head.

Incredible! submitted by Riawhitebell on June 9, 2023, 11:44am This book is even better than the first, it's entertaining, sexy, and has great plot twists.

Fun submitted by kimnichols on June 13, 2023, 10:32am Is this the best book that has ever been written? No. Would I even call this a well written book? No. However, did I love this book? Yes. It was fun, engaging, builds on the world from the first one and honestly had the right amount of romance for me. It made me keep reading the rest of the series and to me, this is the best one out of the five.

BEST BOOK EVER submitted by tabbytaz13 on June 13, 2023, 12:28pm This is my favorite book of all time!!

Amazing! submitted by lemontea557 on June 21, 2023, 12:10am This book is FANTASTIC! Interesting, fun, and has lots of plot twists!

Best Book of the Series submitted by adivens on June 30, 2023, 1:07pm Fan of the ACOTAR series, but this book is certainly the best in the series!

Loved this one submitted by blancharddana on August 4, 2023, 7:51am Much better than ACOTAR, lots of plot twists, romance, lots of chaos and excitement!

I. Can. Not. DEAL. submitted by The Book Broken Girl on April 15, 2024, 11:43am Original Review:
Ok, I know the title of this review makes it seem like I didn't like the book. That is, point-blank, WRONG. This book is one of the best - YA - romantasies I have read in a while. Like, let's be clear, at the moment Rebecca Yarros and Sarah J Maas are holding the Adult Romantasy genre up with their bare hands, but who is reining supreme in YA Romantasy? Its Sarah J Maas. Again. And, obviously, it started with Throne of Glass. But WHAT BOOK is on top (in my opinion)? It's this one! Ok, I haven't yet read A Court of Wings and Ruin (I'm going to soon I swear I just need to buy it) but THIS?! This book is absolute gold. Perfect in every way (well, almost. I have one big gripe with it that is quite possibly the most trivial thing in the world, but I'll get there). I've already read ACOMAF on audiobook TWICE. In a ROW. But this weekend, when I go to Target and buy it and ACOWAR (and either ACOTAR or ACOFAS it depends) I'm going to reread it and annotate it, and then write a super long review on Goodreads, which I will then go and upload HERE, because I'm a NICE. HUMAN. <3. Grazie for reading!
