Horror in Victorian London submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on June 17, 2016, 2:18pm Warning: spoilers.

Season two picks up the story line almost immediately after where the first season ends. Sir Malcom buries the daughter he was unable to save, only to return to London and find that Vanessa Ives has encountered a new evil that their team must now battle.
Despite the name, “Penny Dreadful” is anything but. The science fiction/fantasy series from Showtime and Sky gathers characters and other elements from 19th century literature, along with other 19th century persona and phenomenon into a complex drama.

Our main characters include Vanessa Ives (played by Eva Green of “Casino Royale” and “Dark Shadows”), who occasionally becomes possessed by a demon and so is able to converse with and see supernatural beings when no one else can, and Sir Malcolm Murray (played by former James Bond actor Timothy Dalton). Their team includes Sembene (Danny Sapani) who came to Britain from Africa to work for Murray; Dr. Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway); and Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), an American sharpshooter running from his own criminal past, likely caused by his losing control of himself when he turns into a werewolf during the full moon.

During own heroes’ adventures (or most often, misadventures), we meet characters from other 19th century fiction, including Frankenstein’s monster (who has asked the doctor to create a wife for him, so he will no longer be alone in the world), and Dorian Gray, who is infatuated with more than one of our main characters.

The name “penny dreadful” refers to horror stories printed onto cheap paper and sold for a penny in Victorian Britain. As the show is set in Victorian London and depicts a great deal of blood and gore, the name is quite apt.
