"A Tom Doherty Associates book."
"In 2005, Brandon Sanderson debuted with Elantris, an epic fantasy unlike any other then on the market. To celebrate its tenth anniversary, Tor is reissuing Elantris in a special edition, a fresh chance to introduce it to the myriad readers who have since become Sanderson fans. This new edition begins with a preface by author Dan Wells, the first person to read the completed novel, and a new afterword by Sanderson explaining how he came to write the book and its place in the Cosmere, the unified universe of all his Tor novels. Also included is the first book appearance of the short story "The Hope of Elantris," revealing interesting action referred to late in the novel, and an expanded version of the "Ars Arcanum" appendix, with more of the technical details of the book's magic that fans can never get enough of. Elantris was truly a milestone both for Sanderson and for the genre of epic fantasy. It deserves this special treatment, something Tor has done only once before, with Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game. Sanderson fans old and new will be excited to discover it"-- Provided by publisher.

solid fantasy novel submitted by ack on August 1, 2020, 7:46pm Like all of the Brandon Sanderson books I've read (admittedly not many), this started kind of slow, dragged a tiny bit in the middle, and concluded satisfyingly. In general, the plot was tighter and more interesting than Mistborne, although I didn't love the characters as much. And the book passed the only test that really matters; I almost missed my stop on public transit a few times because I was so into the book.

Elantris was beautiful, once. And it's still good. submitted by MarkLabo on February 2, 2021, 9:33pm A prince condemned to exile and disease; a noblewoman fighting corruption and searching for a lost loved one; a missionary seeking to convert a culture to his faith. All three of these characters must seek out their goals in and around the ruined city of Elantris.

Elantris is Brandon Sanderson's first published novel, and while it does show its age, the story is still a great read. As with most of Sanderson's works, it's a fairly long fantasy novel with a unique and detailed magic system and setting. The characters - with one particular exception - don't experience that much growth, and vary in their overall levels of interaction with each other and the world, with one of the main characters in particular being mostly disconnected from the other two for most of the book.

That's not to say Elantris is bad, though; it executes its magic system very well, with the characters researching it at the same time as the reader and displaying innovative uses for it, and pulls off a fun, tense conclusion that answers many of the novel's questions while leaving some open for speculation or sequels. For readers who have enjoyed other of Brandon Sanderson's works or who are interested in a well-written fantasy world, Elantris is definitely worth a try.

Not Sanderson's Best... But Still Readable submitted by ohheyitselle on June 9, 2023, 7:25pm I read Elantris after reading The Stormlight Archives and was a bit disappointed! It's obvious that this is Sanderson's first novel (but still better than anything I could write!!!), but the completionist in me wants to read the entirety of Sanderson's universe, the Cosmere. While I did still enjoy Elantris, Sanderson's writing and storytelling definitely improves with each of his books-- I suppose I am just spoiled by his later novels!
