Read by Karen White.
America's first families are unknowable in many ways. No one has insight into their true character like the people who serve their meals and make their beds every day. Full of stories and details by turns dramatic, humorous, and heartwarming, The Residence reveals daily life in the White House as it is really lived through the voices of the maids, butlers, cooks, florists, doormen, engineers, and others who tend to the needs of the president and the first family. These dedicated professionals maintain the six-floor mansion's 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, 28 fireplaces, 3 elevators, and 8 staircases, and prepare everything from hors d'oeuvres for intimate gatherings to meals served at elaborate state dinners. Over the course of the day, they gather in the lower level's basement kitchen to share stories, trade secrets, forge lifelong friendships, and sometimes even fall in love.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Interesting submitted by kressara on June 19, 2016, 10:29pm "Seeing" the behind the scenes parts of the White House and the people who make it happen is very interesting. There were a ton of people quoted in the book and it was hard to keep track of all of them, but in the end you didn't really have to in order to get to the meat of the stories. Many parts of the book do rip away the thin veneer of privacy that the first family has which seems ironic considering how many times some of the White House staff (and the author) repeated the mantra of "what happens in the White House, stays in the White House."
