COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Not What You Expect submitted by Meginator on June 16, 2017, 10:23pm I don't know who at Disney allowed this to happen, but it's a lot of fun to see Mickey Mouse (and his classic character pals) in this light, which feels much closer to the original cartoons than Mickey's more recent incarnations. These shorts are more in the vein of Looney Tunes than, say, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse or even something like DuckTales, and they can get a little bit graphic (the resemblance to Ren & Stimpy is uncanny in parts, and "New York Weenie" is basically a Ren & Stimpy episode). The animation style deliberately echoes the 1920s-1940s and the plots are simple and require little dialog- some are even in French or Portuguese! These are a lot of fun and have tons of references, both subtle and overt, to Disney classics, including a cameo by José Carioca and a repurposing of some lyrics from "Grim Grinning Ghosts." Proceed with caution if you're expecting something saccharine, and be on the lookout for adult humor that flies over kids' heads, but it's been a long time since I've seen this type of classic cartoon and I had a good time laughing out loud during Mickey's mischievous mishaps.
