Kristin Lavransdatter submitted by leighsprauer on July 25, 2015, 9:59am Kristin Lavransdatter is the story of a woman's life in 14th c. Norway. Partly because it is so long (a trilogy) and partly because of Undset's skill as a storyteller, I was sad when I finished the book: Kristin and her family had become like friends, and I missed them when the book was over. Kristin's life is familiar in her experiences of love, sin, death, redemption, and joy, but also foreign, in its setting of medieval Catholicism and the Norwegian feudal system. (Apparently Undset was well-versed in medieval Norwegian life, and her depictions are accurate, which makes the story that much better.) Although I found the descriptions of the politics somewhat less interesting than those of religion and daily life, on the whole the story was captivating.
Captivating submitted by EJZ on June 16, 2018, 9:09pm Rarely do you get to see a character's full arc of development as you will with Kristin Lavransdatter. I think the recently released audiobook is a fantastic way to experience the novels, as the narration is great, the translation is accurate, and it is well-paced. Though it's an extremely long read, it moves well, and at the end, there's a definite feeling of loss due to the plot, but also because you are really saying goodbye to a friend.
