The story centers on Jonas, young man who lives in a supposedly ideal world of conformity and contentment. Yet as he begins to spend time with the elder, who is the sole keeper of all the community's memories, Jonas quickly begins to discover the dark and deadly truths of his community's secret past. At extreme odds, Jonas knows that he must escape their world to protect them all; a challenge that no one has ever succeeded at before.

The Receiver Of Memories Is A Very Important Job For Two Reasons. 1. There Is Only One Receiver Of Memories. 2. The Receiver Of Memories Is The Only Person That Has Memories Of The Past. When Asked If He Is Strong Enough Jonas Answers Yes. During The Movies Unfolding You Find Out That Jonas Is Not Strong Enough To Be The Receiver Of Memories. When He Learns That "Releasing Someone To Elsewhere" Is Killing Them He Wants To Cross A Border Called "The Border Of Memories." This Border Keeps All The Memories Inside The Receiver Of Memories. If A Receiver Of Memories Where To Cross That Border Then All The Memories Would "Spill" Out And Everyone Would Have Them. The Giver (The Old Receiver Of Memories) Thinks That That Should Happen. He Helps Jonas By Giving Him A Map Of Elsewhere. Later Jonas Finds Out That Gabe (Jonas's Semi-Brother) Is Going To Be Released And Jonas Ends Up Taking Gabe With Him. Gabe Is A Baby And When There Are Twins, The Heavier One Gets To Live. Gabe Is The Smaller One So He Is Going To Be Released. The Chief Elder Does Not Want Jonas To Cross The Border. She Does All In Her Power To Stop Him But Fails. Fiona, One Of Jonas's Childhood Friends, Is About To Get Released For Helping Jonas Escape. Jonas Has A Time Limit Now. He Does Not Know It But If He Does Not Cross The Border In Time Fiona Is Going To Get Killed. If He Crosses In Time People Will Realize That Releasing Someone Is Killing Them And Stop. If Not, Fiona Will Be Killed. With The Help Of His Friends Jonas Crosses The Border. But Does He Make It In Time...?
