In the post-apocalypse, folks getting by in the Sanctuary (the remains of St. Louis) are surprised when a woman rushes in to report that in the West, civilization flourishes and crops grow. Unfortunately, there's also an army on the march that enslaves everyone it encounters.

Lewis & Clark revisited submitted by Jannana37 on July 11, 2015, 10:29am The author constructs a post-apocalyptic world, starting in St. Louis. After a woman arrives from the west, confirming rumors that civilization exists outside the city, a party of explorers including a guard (Mina Clark) and a history museum curator (Lewis Meriwether) manages to escape, with the goal of finding out what's Out There. Clark's physical skills and Lewis's book learning are essential to their survival. Along the way they encounter not only geographic barriers (mountains, rivers) but mutated wildlife and communities of refugees. As a history buff who has recently read a lot about Lewis & Clark in preparation for a trip out west, I was very impressed at how the story paralleled the real life explorers, as the party visited real places (for example, the former Mandan villages) and ran into modern versions of historical characters. Carefully plotted, very cool book!
