Jenny submitted by leighsprauer on March 16, 2017, 1:23pm Of the three of Undset's novels that I have read - Jenny, Gunnar's Daughter, and Kristin Lavrensdatter, this is my least favorite. Which is to say, it's only good, but not fantastic. Set in contemporary - that is, early 20th century - Italy, Norway, and Germany, Jenny follows the story of the title character and her circle of friends, mostly young artists living on their own, and their various love lives. Undset has a talent for making characters feel modern and relevant, whether they are living in 20th c., 13th c., or the 11th c., and in this Jenny does not disappoint. The main character contemplates issues of what it means to be a woman, happiness, love, family, and career, in ways that are still being discussed today. Jenny was harder to relate to than some of Undset's other characters; I feel like she was not as developed as Vigdis (Gunnar's Daughter) or especially Kristin (Kristin Lavrensdatter), and this might be because Jenny was one of Undset's earlier works. Still, it was well-written and engaging, and I'm glad I read it if only for giving a more complete picture of Undset's work.
