Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon, Claire Keelan, Rosie Fellner.
Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon are on an all-expenses-paid trip for the Observer. Their tough assignment is to drive through beautiful Italian country, eat lavishly, and stay in exquisite small hotels, all so that one or the other can write high-toned culinary drivel for the paper.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Couldn't finish watching it submitted by sara on June 12, 2015, 1:04pm It was highly recommended, and maybe I wasn’t in the right mood to watch it, but it was so boring I couldn’t finish watching it.

My Dinner With Rob and Steve: Part Due submitted by B00kw0rm on August 22, 2016, 3:53am British comic actors Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon are wildly popular entertainment industry colleagues in real life. Both are adept at doing "impressions" (imitations or caricatures) of other entertainers for comic effect. In "The Trip to Italy" (2014), and it's antecedent, "The Trip" (2010), Coogan and Brydon also perform caricatures of their own public personas, in the context of semi-scripted Middle-Aged Male Road Trip/Buddy Narratives.

Fans of British humour, middle-aged male buddy stories, travelogues, and food porn will all be gratified by "The Trip to Italy," in which Coogan and Brydon manage to infuse la dolce vita with public banter, bickering, and hilarity of questionable taste. The Italian trip's premise is that Coogan and Brydon are doing field research for a video programme which involves fine dining: thus, the film involves plenty of eating. Although the characters never resort to prayer, they admit to being increasingly conscious of the passing of the time--as middle-aged men with imperfect personal and professional lives. Amore (in its various forms) also inevitably appears during the journey in Italia,

Viewers who are impatient with long scenes of one-on-one dialogue (as in "My Dinner With Andre," 1981) may find the film slow-going--particularly given that many scenes occur at restaurant tables. I was previously unfamiliar with Brydon, and initially unaware that I had inadvertently picked up the "second installment" of this series. In hindsight, one may need to listen carefully to opening scenes' dialogue, or have patience to stick with the storyline, in order to understand the plot and characters. But those who enjoy spectacular filmic scenery will probably find this virtual trip worthwhile.
