Lots of info... parents should read first submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on July 15, 2017, 9:58am A great book for introducing all the facts of life to a late elementary/ early middle school audience (it's recommended for ages 10 and up, but parents should read it first to decide if their particular child is ready for it). It deals with all the parts, for both boys and girls. The drawings are multi-racial and include diverse body types. All the dimensions of puberty that I would hope would be addressed are in this one: body changes, emotions, online safety, birth control... I was surprised but reasonably pleased by the handling of a two page section about abortion. If you are going to tell young people about bodies and babies, this exists. It identifies that this is controversial, and did not extoll it as something to be pursued, but gave information about what it is. I wouldn't have gone there yet, myself, but I thought they did it decently well.

The book comes from a perspective of "this is your body, this is the other kind of body, this is what sex is, this is what birth control is, here is information you for you to know." Over and over it frames questions and thoughts and feelings as "perfectly normal." In the context of having already talked to my 11 1/2 year old daughter and given her the American Girl book (which really framed a lot about *her* body), I felt like this was a great piece to add about the boys & sex piece. Again, I talked with her, too, but this gives her a reference to go back to and in case there is anything she doesn't feel comfortable asking me about.

Highly recommended.
