"The Romans have long since departed, and the Britian is steadily declining into ruin. But, at least, the wars that once ravaged the country have ceased. Axl and Beatrice, a couple of elderly Britons, decide that now is the time, finally, for them set off across this troubled land of mist and rain to find the son they have not seen for years, the son they can scarcely remember"--Dust jacket.

Lacking submitted by lec.dank on June 17, 2016, 3:40pm Writing style is excellent, as always. However, the content is a bit... Boring. Halfway through the book not much happens, and the characters are rather bland.
loved it submitted by bec on August 7, 2018, 9:45am An elderly couple searches for their estranged son, but their memories- of their son, of the past- are slipping away. I loved this exploration of the passage of time, communal forgetting, and ageing.
(Necessarily?) slow/foggy
submitted by terpsichore17 on July 30, 2021, 12:29pm
4 or 4.5 story, 3 execution (or maybe I just hate to acknowledge how aging generally entails loss?).
Briton versus Saxon, man versus fell beast, a couple traveling together through all manner of harsh weather, obstacles natural and supernatural, and through the magical mists of forgetfulness: these should all have drawn me eagerly forward (in fairness: the monastery, the fight about its tower, and the poisonous goat did help speed the way).
But the majority of this book was rather sluggish. To an extent, I understand why – the confusion attending the collective loss of memory must be depicted somehow – but even leaving aside the characters who don’t quite recall where they’re going or why, the prose itself was leaden and left me unmoved.
Not his best work submitted by kath on July 31, 2021, 9:16pm This book was written by one of the best writers in the worlds - and it is only ok. Read something else by him. Re-read the Remains of the Day which is sublime. This book is slow and just off.
slow and plodding submitted by nemiller on August 9, 2023, 3:31pm This may be one of those "Love It Or Hate It" books. I found it so slow and plodding, I couldn't believe it was only 317 pages. I kept losing focus and having to re-read parts. If you have read the first chapter or so, and it hasn't hooked you, then this might not be the book for you either.
