COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Best of Karloff's Thriller submitted by sdwitmer on July 10, 2017, 9:49am This excellent anthology series of horror and suspense stories hosted by Boris Karloff features some of the best television writers and actors of the early '60s. This Fan Favorites selection includes the following episodes:

from Season 1:

The Purple Room (ep. 7): A fun twist on the classic spend-the-night-in-a-haunted-house ghost story starring Rip Torn, Patricia Barry, and Richard Anderson.
The Watcher (ep. 8): A creepy stalker story directed by John Brahm and starring Martin Gabel and Richard Chamberlain. This one wouldn't be on my list of top 10 episodes.
The Cheaters (ep. 15): One of the best episodes, actually a series of three stories about a pair of supernatural spectacles that allow the wearer to see the truth about the world, often resulting in tragic consequences. Director John Brahm adapts a Robert Bloch story starring Harry Townes, Jack Weston, Mildred Dunnock, Linda Watkins, and Paul Newlan.
The Hungry Glass (ep. 16): Another haunted house episode, based on a Robert Bloch story and starring William Shatner, Joanna Heyes, Russell Johnson, and Elizabeth Allen. The cast has a quirky chemistry that balances out the spooky atmosphere of an isolated seaside house without mirrors.
Well of Doom (ep. 23): Solid episode about a supernatural abduction that's not what it seems. John Brahm directs Ronald Howard, Henry Daniell, and Torin Thatcher.
The Prisoner in the Mirror (ep. 34): Not quite a top-10 episode, but an entertaining story about an imprisoned sorcerer who manages to escape into the modern world, starring Lloyd Bochner, Henry Daniell, Marion Ross, and Jack Mullaney.
Pigeons from Hell (ep. 36): A classic episode. A couple of teens encounter some genuinely scary magic when they camp out in an abandoned swamp mansion. Stars Brandon De Wilde, Crahan Denton and Ottola Nesmith.
The Grim Reaper (ep. 37): Another excellent episode. A popular death-obsessed horror writer purchases a seemingly cursed painting that causes rifts among her family and associates. A Robert Bloch tale starring Natalie Schafer, William Shatner, and Elizabeth Allen.

from Season 2:

The Weird Tailor (ep. 4): Very odd and wacky story about a suit animated by black magic. More Robert Bloch, starring Henry Jones and George Macready.
The Incredible Doktor Markesan (ep. 22): Best episode of season 2, and one of the series' best as well. Dick York and Boris Karloff star in this creepy tale about a bitter professor who enacts revenge on his former colleagues.

There are several notable omissions in this "top 10" collection, such as The Terror in Teakwood, and the selection neglects the crime/suspense episodes in favor of horror stories. Nevertheless, if you're unfamiliar with Thriller, this collection is a great place to start, as most of these episodes do represent the series at its best. Fans of Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Twilight Zone should definitely check it out.
