COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Couldn't finish this one. submitted by bookher on July 15, 2015, 7:22pm I just couldn't bear to sit through this to figure out if they ever solved the death of Leon because he was a horrible person and I simply didn't care if anyone figured out how he came to his death.

Bleak, a bit amateurish submitted by j_charpentier on August 29, 2017, 12:04pm As a huge fan of Philip Seymour Hoffman's acting, especially his less well-known, smaller roles, I was compelled to check out "God's Pocket". In one of his last roles, Hoffman looks unwell and delivers a somewhat forgettable performance. Perhaps if I was unaware of the personal difficulties he was going through at the time I might have been less preoccupied with the man and more invested in the role. Ultimately, the script is mediocre and there are a few cringe-worthy moments of working class glorification/caricature that were apparently intended to be homage but fall short.

Check out Hoffman's brilliant and unrecognized "Love, Liza", based on a screenplay his brother Gordy wrote, instead. It's a much, much better film.

An aside: the infobox above suggests that the screenplay for "God's Pocket" was adapted from Pete Dexter's National Book Award-winning novel "Paris Trout", but this is an error; it is adapted from the eponymous semi-autobiographical novel published in 1983.

much better than your average Hollywood crap. submitted by Tassos on April 25, 2021, 6:25pm I saw it (piecewise) again today. I had seen it a couple years ago. Hoffman was great. What a loss to the TALENTED actor community...and he was not the only one...damned drugs...
