"I come to get my gun" -- "Over my head I see freedom in the air" -- "The day of camouflage is past" -- "Fighting for what we didn't ahve" -- "I wasn't being non-violent" -- Which cheek you gonna turn? -- Standing our ground -- "The King of Love is dead" -- Understanding history.
"Civil rights scholar Charles E. Cobb, Jr. reveals how nonviolent activists and their allies kept the civil rights movement alive by bearing and, when necessary, using firearms. Whether patrolling their neighborhoods, garrisoning their homes, or firing back at attackers, these men and women were crucial to the movement's success, as were the weapons they carried. Drawing on his firsthand experiences in the Southern Freedom Movement and interviews with fellow participants, Cobb offers a controversial examination of the vital role guns have played in securing American liberties"--Provided by publisher.
"Civil rights scholar Charles E. Cobb, Jr. reveals the fundamental, but long-overlooked, role that armed self-defense played in the golden era of the civil rights movement"--Provided by publisher.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Much new information... I wish I had read it sooner submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 12, 2021, 9:49pm Wow. When we think about the Modern Civil Rights Movement (MCRM), one of the first words/ phrases that comes to mind is “nonviolent.” Cobb lays out in clear and compelling narration that the struggle of Black Americans has always been bound up in violence, both towards them and in their consideration of responses. The MCRM in the 1960’s was no exception, and even those who professed to be nonviolent had to make interesting concessions around guns, violence, and self-defense. Though the author gives background to each era and movement, I think that this book will make the most sense to people who already have some basic grounding in Black history, particularly the Freedom Movement of the ‘60’s. But within that, it added information and perspective that I had not encountered, and brings a whole new dimension to the struggle. Outstanding book. I wish I had read it sooner!
