All seven episodes from the first series of the Edwardian costume drama following the lives and loves of those above and below stairs in a stately home prior to the outbreak of WWI. The Grantham family, long time custodians of Downton Abbey, face a crisis when the heir to the estate dies on the 'Titanic'. With his three daughters unable to inherit by law, Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville), the current Earl of Grantham, must try and marry his eldest daughter off in order to obtain an heir. Meanwhile, the family's determination to cling to class and rank is mirrored in a number of growing rivalries between the servants which threaten to undermine the smooth running of the house. A stunning and colorful drama set around the aristocratic Crawley family and the staff which serves them. Set between 1912 and 1914, Downton Abbey chronicles the conflict of class, gender, and politics, and serves it up with a refreshing dollop of sizzle and scandal.

The gold standard in historical dramas submitted by MH17 on August 30, 2019, 4:31pm Is there anything better than Downton Abbey? I was skeptical at first, thinking it was going to be another slow-moving costume drama period piece. But no. This is outstanding! The writing is nuanced, dramatic, well-paced and the conflicts are many. Real stakes involved here, real consequences for characters. And the acting is superb. There's nobody better than Maggie Smith as the dowager countess. Nobody. She communicates so much in a glance and can deliver a withering remark like no other. Here's a series that absolutely lives up to its hype. A moving and thought-provoking viewing experience.

Amazing historical drama submitted by blancharddana on June 21, 2022, 2:24pm Usually it takes me a little while to get into period pieces, but I was captured right off the bat with this one! So many compelling storylines to follow, and really makes you think about what it was like to live through major historical events. Maggie Smith never gets it wrong!

a must watch submitted by dailyreader on July 29, 2023, 9:14pm Great historical drama. The first season is one of my favorites. I liked how it made me think about the norms of that time in history.
