"On her nineteenth birthday, Princess Kelsea Raleigh Glynn, raised in exile, sets out on a perilous journey back to the castle of her birth to ascend her rightful throne. Plain and serious, a girl who loves books and learning, Kelsea bears little resemblance to her mother, the vain and frivolous Queen Elyssa. But though she may be inexperienced and sheltered, Kelsea is not defenseless: Around her neck hangs the Tearling sapphire, a jewel of immense magical power; and accompanying her is the Queen's Guard, a cadre of brave knights led by the enigmatic and dedicated Lazarus. Kelsea will need them all to survive a cabal of enemies who will use every weapon--from crimson-caped assassins to the darkest blood magic--to prevent her from wearing the crown."-- Amazon.com.

Intelligent Fantasy submitted by sdunav on July 23, 2014, 4:57pm Like "The Goblin Emperor", Johansen's fantasy is a fast-moving, smart fantasy, with a young protagonist suddenly thrust into a position of power, deceit, and war. "The Queen of the Tearling" also has some interesting dystopian elements. I hope it isn't years before the next volume comes out!

Great Fantasy submitted by imracom on July 30, 2014, 9:49pm For fantasy lovers!

Great fantasy book submitted by steveiew on June 22, 2018, 1:03pm The Queen of the Tearling is a great coming of age story mixed with some dystopian elements. The story of the young queen coming into power and standing up to the evil kingdom next door is a great read.

Queen of the Tearling submitted by ashflowtuff on June 17, 2019, 10:48am Great fantasy book!

Worthwhile read submitted by yamiyo on June 27, 2023, 8:35am "Queen of the Tearling" is a worthwhile read for the mysteries surrounding the kingdom and the main character, Kelsea. Although Kelsea is well-educated, there are so many things about the Tearling kingdom that she (and by extension, the reader) do not know about Queen's Guard, the Red Queen, the kingdom's own history, and more. Give a read!
