This book is a descriptive catalogue of the Dixon Gallery in Memphis' remarkable holdings - donated by Warda Stevens Stout and considered to be among the most important in the world. But the book is also one of the first in English to describe in captivating detail the artisans, aesthetics, social and political intrigue, financial arrangements, and courtly ambitions that resided in porcelain factories at Ansbach, Frankenthal, Fürstenberg, Höchst, Ludwigsburg, Meissen, Nymphenburg, and in Thuringia.
"German Porcelain of the Eighteenth Century is a descriptive catalogue of the remarkable holdings of the Dixon Gallery in Memphis--donated by Warda Stevens Stout and considered to be among the most important in the world. But the book is also one of the first in English to describe in captivating detail the artisans, aesthetics, social and political intrigue, financial arrangements, and courtly ambitions that resided in porcelain factories at Ansbach, Frankenthal, Fürstenberg, Höchst, Ludwigsburg, Meissen, Nymphenburg, and Thüringen. Scholar Christina H. Nelson addresses the social and cultural influences that shaped porcelain manufacture in the German states, from the introduction of new foods to the spread of Enlightenment, linked to the growing taste for luxury goods in the courts of Europe. Nelson also unravels the organization of the porcelain industry, from the assemblage of raw materials to the training of workers. The largest part of the book is the catalogue, organized by factory: a short historical essay is followed by entries for the objects that were produced at that location. The majority of the collection is from the factories of Meissen and Höchst." -- Publisher's description.
