"A Tom Doherty Associates Book."
"The youngest, half-goblin son of the Emperor has lived his entire life in exile, distant from the Imperial Court and the deadly intrigue that suffuses it. But when his father and three sons in line for the throne are killed in an "accident," he has no choice but to take his place as the only surviving rightful heir. Entirely unschooled in the art of court politics, he has no friends, no advisors, and the sure knowledge that whoever assassinated his father and brothers could make an attempt on his life at any moment. Surrounded by sycophants eager to curry favor with the naƮve new emperor and overwhelmed by the burdens of his new life, he can trust nobody. Amid the swirl of plots to depose him, offers of arranged marriages, and the specter of the unknown conspirators who lurk in the shadows, he must quickly adjust to life as the Goblin Emperor. All the while, he is alone, and trying to find even a single friend . . . and hoping for the possibility of romance, yet also vigilant against the unseen enemies that threaten him, lest he lose his throne--or his life" -- from author's web page.

Politics & Fantasy submitted by sdunav on June 16, 2014, 1:57pm Fun, complicated fantasy about an unlikely emperor who has to learn to navigate a Byzantine court full of people (mostly elves, another racial group) who don't particularly like him or want him to be in charge. Intelligent fantasy!

Becoming an emperor submitted by KathyD on June 13, 2015, 8:46am Set in a world of goblins and elves, Maia unexpectedly leaves banishment to become a mixed-race emperor, figuring out things along the way. A compelling story that keeps you saying "just one more chapter", despite only a handful of chapters with "action". Good choice for young advanced readers who have outgrown the kids' section (would get a PG movie rating). Nominated for a 2014 Nebula award.
I didn't notice until the end that there's a visitor's guide to the kingdom and list of names that might have made it easier to keep track of the characters and titles along the way.

Introvert main character submitted by mowjac on June 14, 2023, 7:21pm This highly visualized and politically complex fantasy world of elves and goblins was a quietly entrancing read. Maia, the main character, is thrust into the role of emperor through a quirk of fate. Maia is a quiet, slow but not hesitant main character, who observes people and situations and only acts when necessary. Compelling in the unfolding layers of the culture, I found this an engrossing read.

So unexpected submitted by sarajowaycee on July 21, 2023, 1:39pm I did not expect to be so swept away by this gorgeous novel about what it means to live life well and kindly. With court intrigue!
