Read by Archie Panjabi.
When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, but her miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey. I am Malala is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, and of a father who encouraged his daughter to attend school in a society that prizes sons.

Listened with my kids... great discussion submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on August 7, 2018, 6:15pm An outstanding book that addresses the history and politics of Pakistan (particularly in the Valley of Swat, where Malala is from), and personal events that happened to a girl who wanted to go to school. I listened to this as an audiobook with my 12 and 14 year olds in the car (I suspect their attention waxed and waned), and was a little concerned about my 12 year old daughter hearing some of the history and violence that I knew would be included. However, we talked about it, and at the end, had some great discussions about what life is like in other parts of the world, and how there are places where women can’t walk on the streets without a male relative, the right to vote, safety, family, and much more. There are a million reviews about this book and a million stories about this Nobel Peace Prize winner, so I will simply say that I learned a lot, and it sparked wonderful discussions, especially with my daughter.
