A long slog for Charles II submitted by ssands on July 19, 2015, 7:22pm This book follows King Charles II as he wanders around the English countryside, attempting to escape from the rebels who beat his army. I think that Heyer stayed fairly close to her source material (there's a long bibliography), and as such can't be blamed for the long, roundabout, and somewhat repetitive travels of the king. As it is based on real life, characters came in and out of the story, never to be seen again. Little questions are never resolved, as they would have been in a wholly fictional account. I enjoyed seeing how the king gracefully adapted to his completely changed circumstances. It's probably more fun than reading about it in a history book and I'm glad to have learned something new, but I'm afraid that I didn't find it very interesting.
