Happy Marriage submitted by hcf on August 31, 2014, 7:00pm Short stories from Ann Patchett about her relationships.

Essays by a Wonderful Writer submitted by sdunav on June 12, 2015, 1:46pm Patchett is better known for her novels (like Bel Canto, which I think I read for book club), but this is a collection of her non-fiction essays - many previously published in Harper's, the NY Times Magazine, Granta, etc.

Anyway, the story of her marriage (and her previous divorce, and her parents' divorce, and many other failed relationships) is just a minor part of this. My favorite story was a heart-breaking one about taking care of her grandmother, but there are also wonderful descriptions of living in Tennessee, her dog, Catholic school and her later relationship with nuns, co-owning an independent book store, writing and writing workshops, book tours, struggling with the Christian right over a perceived lesbian relationship in her story about a friend and fellow author (culminating in a protest over her speaking at Clemson U. in SC)....just so much I enjoyed. I think I actually liked this more than the novels of hers I've read.
