read together with Saints submitted by camelsamba on July 6, 2014, 4:10pm Boxers and Saints are a pair of graphic novels that dip into the history of the Boxer Rebellion, and are told from different perspectives. They both rely on magical realism. This one gives the point of view of the Boxers – native Chinese who fight to overcome the ruling dynasty and rid the country of foreigners. Saints is written from the perspective of the Chinese Christians (who are called ‘secondary devils’ because of their affiliation with the ‘foreign devils’). They are parallel in time and overlap in a few places in terms of plot points and characters. One of the most interesting aspects is how certain characters are given more depth if you read both books.

Boxers and Saints submitted by Lmin on June 24, 2018, 9:43am These are two amazing companion novels about the Boxer Rebellion. Be sure to read American Born Chinese and Secret Coders as well. Both are by Gene Luen Yang.

Deeply affecting submitted by FordAlpha on August 13, 2019, 11:25am "Boxers" and "Saints" are incredibly effective historical fiction. Using magical realism to convey the underlying themes and motivations of the combatants, author Gene Luen Yang brings to life a critical period in the intersection of Chinese and European history. It's remarkable how the author is able to get inside the heads of characters on diametrically opposed sides of the conflict. You don't have to read both books to learn from one, and you don't have to read them in a particular order, although I think that "Boxers" first and "Saints" second is better because you'll get a real surprise twist at the end of "Saints".
