First-rate historical humor submitted by FordAlpha on August 29, 2019, 10:23pm Bloody and brilliant, horrifying and hilarious, profane and poetic, this historical novel is like nothing else I have ever read. It alludes in many ways to "Huckleberry Finn", and James McBride is every bit as funny as Mark Twain while turning the events of that classic novel on their heads. It's not for the squeamish, but I couldn't put it down. Reading "The Good Lord Bird" inspired me to read several other books, both fiction and non-fiction, about John Brown and the Bleeding Kansas period.

Language unlike any I have ever encountered submitted by kkjammers on May 20, 2021, 12:33pm Witty, sad, believable, funny, graphic - like history and reality. McBride tells the story from the point of view of a 12-year-old black male ex-slave dressing as a female, for "protection." The voices and descriptions are appropriate for the people of the time, unique and fresh. One of my favorite descriptions for someone whose brain is a little "cloudy" or who is a bit slow: "The cheese had slid off his biscuit." I thoroughly enjoyed this remarkable book.
