Order Amid Chaos submitted by Jan Wolter on July 28, 2013, 6:38pm This is second book of the the "Last Policeman" series. An asteroid is still scheduled to hit the Earth, and Henry Palace is still a police detective at heart, but no longer in fact. The police department is no longer investigating crimes, and has discarded all its detectives. Many books imagine civilization falling apart after a global disaster. In this one, 77 days before the asteroid hits, civilization is already on it's last legs. Electricity is gone, water is getting scarce, people are going into survival mode. Or denial. Henry Palace has never wanted to be anything but a policeman, and he has another missing person case to investigate in a world where most people are missing. I always feel like nothing adds interest to a mystery like being set in an interesting world, and pre-apocolypse New Hampshire sure counts. Pretty much everyone, including Henry, is basically insane, because there really is no sane way to behave in the face of the end of the world. Some cling to their old routines, some go off on last flings, or noble quests. Some take their own lives, some pray, some sign onto far-fetched schemes to try to save the world. What would you do?
