In a small, remote community in rural Tennessee in the years between the two world wars, John Wesley Rattner, a young boy, and Marion Sylder, an outlaw and bootlegger who, unbeknownst to either of them, has killed the boy's father enact a drama that seems born of the land itself.

I'll resist calling it "Faulknerian," even though it is... submitted by foilista on June 19, 2023, 10:44am My first of McCarthy's "early novels"/"southern novels." This early work feels very different from his later southwestern novels, although they share an interest in mythic violence, men who inhabit the margins of history, and ponderous landscapes. I found the Orchard Keeper to be moody and grim, and I loved its descriptions of temporality and seasonality. Compared to the harsh atmospheric dryness of McCarthy's later novels (literally, they are in the desert), I enjoyed the the fetid/swampy/damp quality of this one. The racial politics of the novel definitely pin it down as a novel of 1965.
