A very bad rat rides his horse along the highway stealing travelers' food, from a rabbit's clover to a spider's flies, until clever Duck introduces him to her "sister."

Okay, not the best from this author/illustrator combo submitted by kkellis on July 13, 2018, 2:11pm Not the best book from Julia Donaldson/Axel Scheffler, but worth a read. My kids liked how the Duck tricked the Highway Rat. The text doesn't flow quite as well as it does in, say, the Gruffalo.

Not Up to Par submitted by Meginator on August 1, 2022, 3:55pm Coming from such a powerhouse pair, this book is a bit of a disappointment. The method of trickery that comes at the book’s climax feels unoriginal and unconvincing, with the villain’s ultimate fate entirely disconnected from their actions and unconnected to the broader story; within the context of the book, it feels too unrealistic to be at all plausible and sinks the whole thing as a result. Technically, the book is fine: the character design has plenty of charm and the text has a singsong rhythm to it with an unusual, but clever, use of variation to create a chorus of sorts. Altogether, though, I found this boring and lacking the creative pair’s usual charm.
