Another fantastic Sanderson book submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 17, 2014, 8:26pm Way too scary for my turning-10-year-old (just for reference), this book is fantastic. Then again, is there any Sanderson book that isn't? I haven't met one yet.

Sanderson creates absolutely dynamic, fascinating new universes complete from the political and theological realms all the way down to how coinage works and student groups snub each other. There are layers of mysteries, characters with depth, and interactions that make so much SENSE between who the characters are. Sanderson is brilliant at "showing not telling" in his stories. The unfolding of the plot and how the characters respond teaches us who they are and gives us the chance to learn their traits.

He's simply brilliant at it.

Excellent choice for tweens and teens submitted by jmb.mlis on June 21, 2014, 2:13pm We listened to the audiobook - SO SO Great! Excellent world-building, great character development, interesting plot. This one has it all.

Strange premise turns into a great story submitted by steveiew on June 22, 2018, 9:48am The idea of people who have the ability to bring chalk drawings to life seems a little strange, but Brandon Sanderson makes it work. Sanderson creates a different world with an unexpected magical system. This is a great YA book that adult fans of Sanderson will enjoy as well. Though with all his writing projects currently going on it might be awhile until this story is finished.

Great Book for Older Readers submitted by gwenyth on August 6, 2019, 6:58am I've always loved Brandon Sanderson but this is one of my absolute favorites. The premise is extremely unique (people performing magic using chalk and geometry) but that doesn't stop it from having fantastic world-building, a surprisingly dark mystery, and interesting characters. I just wish that there was more to the series, but given the length of Brandon Sanderson's other books I wouldn't be surprised if it takes a while!

A fun story, leaves you wanting more submitted by bahr on July 22, 2022, 8:16am The story has a very interesting premise, using an every day item to create magic. The story reads a bit as Sanderson describes, a story he planned to integrate into his wider “Cosmere” universe but later decided not to. It’s not a bad thing, but those elements are there if you know what to look for.

The story has great characters too, and plenty of twists that make sense when they happen. I found myself wishing the book was a bit longer but not because the end was unsatisfying. The final events were quite fun and satisfying. Still, I find myself wishing for a sequel. Here’s hoping.

I think if you like Sanderson or anything like his work, give this one a try.
