Code breakers solve the mystery submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 14, 2013, 12:12am After serving as code breakers during World War II, four women find civilian life dull. Then, one of their number, whose specialty was solving puzzles and noticing patterns, notices another pattern--this time in a series of local murders. So she brings together her circle of friends to solve the crime.

SPOILER ALERT

The women soon figure out that a particularly misogynistic serial killer is torturing and killing women, but the police will not step in to help, no matter how many times the code breakers show them evidence. The show is very graphic in its depiction of the torture and of domestic violence, so many viewers will (rightfully) find it disturbing.

Those who enjoy British television will recognize the stars of "Survivors" and "Tipping the Velvet."

intense submitted by airgood on June 15, 2015, 3:29pm This is a great period show with a fast-paced plot. As the previous reviewer noted, the show is definitely graphic and not for the faint of heart. I wouldn't characterize it as gratuitous violence, but it is intense at parts.

suspensful submitted by sumsaylor on July 20, 2015, 8:15pm This was a well thought out, murder mystery. "The Bletchley Circle" is about women who worked on cracking German military codes during World War II. When young women start disappearing and wind up dead in 1952, one of the code-breakers, becomes interested in the case, sees a pattern emerging. She finds old colleagues from the Bletchley years and they work together find the killer.

Creepy case, wonderful main characters submitted by willow on July 21, 2016, 9:55pm The premise behind this show -- a group of smart women solve mysteries -- is made even more interesting because of the historical basis behind women who worked at Bletchley Park doing similar work.

The first episode is too much like "Silence of the Lambs," and I hesitate to recommend it for anyone who isn't quite accustomed to disturbing violent drama.

The other episodes in the series are significantly less disturbing, and the ensemble cast (and sets, and clothing) have a better chance to shine.

great show about women in science/math!! submitted by umich.reader on June 17, 2022, 6:51pm So good. Great characters.
