COMMUNITY REVIEWS

The Borgias submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 16, 2013, 9:34pm This television series presents a mostly accurate depiction of the Borgia family from the election of Pope Alexander VI through his death. The family was famous for its licentious behavior and lavish spending of Church funds on food and risque parties, which the show portrays in great detail.

In this second season, we see more of Niccolo Machiavelli, who based his political science thesis "The Prince" on Cesare. The two characters' interactions lead viewers to see just how Machiavelli could have come to the conclusions he made about politics.

Viewers should note that the series is very violent. This violence is historically accurate, but also (rightfully) disturbing. The violence includes war, murder, torture and rape. There are numerous lengthy torture scenes.

An interesting historical footnote that is not part of the show: Thanks to his numerous children's strategic marriages, Alexander VI became the ancestor of most of the royal families of Europe.
