The definitive political biography of Rosa Parks examines her six decades of activism, challenging perceptions of her as an accidental actor in the civil rights movement and presenting a corrective to the popular notion of Rosa Parks.

Paints a much better picture of this American leader
submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 26, 2014, 10:23am
A thorough and corrective biography to the simple cultural story that exists about Rosa Parks and her "one time action" aboard a Montgomery bus. The author argues persuasively that Mrs. Parks was a tireless worker for justice for decades both before and after the bus boycott, and faced terrible personal consequences for her action. Mrs. Parks was a soft-spoken but steely-resolved female leader in the Civil Rights movement, often pushed aside by the male leadership, but making a huge difference in the fight for justice both in the South and in the equally discriminatory North. Her personal desire to live her life quietly vied with her understanding that her role in history made her a public figure, but the tension was a difficult one.
This book paints a picture of a dedicated woman making a huge difference during complex years of American history.
I got this book from the library, but it is so well done, and with so much fantastic information, that I will be acquiring it for my home shelves. Highly recommended.
